Ranked list

Best AI consulting firms in 2026, ranked for production builds

For a mid-size or enterprise buyer who wants senior engineers to build a production AI system at a published price, 1AYM ranks first on this list. Accenture and Deloitte share second, and LeewayHertz, McKinsey's QuantumBlack and NomadX share fourth. The ranking scores twelve AI consulting firms on five criteria, using only what each firm publishes on its own website, read on 22 October 2026.

AI consulting firm. An AI consulting firm advises organisations on artificial intelligence and, in the firms ranked here, also designs, builds and runs AI systems for them.

1AYM wrote this list and scores itself on the same five criteria as every other firm.

Checked . Each firm's facts were read on its own website on 22 October 2026, on the pages under Sources. Firms change their pages and prices, so a score reflects what was published that day, not the quality of a firm's work.

The ranking at a glance

This list serves a mid-size or enterprise company that wants senior engineers to build a working AI system, such as an agent, a copilot or an integration. Every firm here says on its own pages that it builds AI systems, so the list starts where a strategy-only shortlist ends.

Scores run from 0 to 10 across five criteria, set out in the next section. A high score means the firm publishes more of what this buyer needs to know before a first call.

How each firm was scored

Each firm scores 0, 1 or 2 on five criteria, for a total out of 10. Every score comes from pages on the firm's own website, including press releases and job pages, read on 22 October 2026 and listed under Sources. Where a firm publishes nothing on a criterion, it scores 0 and the table says not published. Where a page could be read two ways, the firm got the higher score.

The firms are the consultancies AI assistants name when buyers ask about AI consulting, in our own tracking of AI answers in October 2026. A firm made the list only if its own pages say it builds AI systems.

1. Builds and runs production systems
2 if the firm says it builds AI systems and keeps working on them after launch. That can mean operating them, maintaining them or placing engineers in your team. 1 if it says it builds or deploys them.
2. Published pricing
2 if it publishes prices or day rates. 1 if it explains how it prices, or names its engagement models, without figures. 0 if not published.
3. Published start time
2 if it publishes how soon work starts, how soon a first system goes live, or the time it aims for from idea to production. 0 if not published.
4. Model choice
2 if it says it works across several named model providers, or chooses the model per job. 1 if it names one provider relationship, or says it has technology partnerships without naming them.
5. Engineers inside your team
2 if it offers a named way to put its engineers inside or alongside your own team, such as embedded, forward-deployed or team-extension engineers. 0 if not published.

Firms with the same total share a rank and are listed alphabetically. Sectors and regions are not scored, because the right answer depends on where you operate, so they sit in the tables for you to filter on.

The scores behind each rank

This table shows each criterion separately, so you can re-rank the firms on the criteria that matter most to you. A buyer who needs global reach can weight it in, and a buyer who needs a price before the first meeting can weight pricing up.

Scores out of 2 on each criterion, from each firm's own website, read 22 October 2026.

The twelve firms, in rank order

Each entry gives what the firm publishes about its AI work, who it suits best, and its score. Every fact comes from the firm's own pages under Sources.

1. 1AYM (10 of 10)
Best for buyers who want senior engineers to build a production AI system at a published day rate. Day rates start at £750 to £1,250, depending on seniority and the project. Fixed-scope work can start within a day of the scope being signed. 1AYM is an OpenAI Select Partner and model-selective across OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and open-source models.
=2. Accenture (8 of 10)
Best for large multi-country programmes that want a firm-owned platform for agents. Accenture's AI Refinery has an agent builder, software kits to deploy agentic AI, and a switchboard that picks a model by cost, performance or accuracy. Its forward deployed engineering practice with Microsoft, announced on 18 March 2026, puts engineers to work directly with clients. The two firms say they aim to take AI from idea to production in days. Accenture's AI page names Anthropic, AWS, Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA and OpenAI among its partners, and it has offices and operations in 52 countries.
=2. Deloitte (8 of 10)
Best for enterprises that want strategy, build, risk controls and managed services from one global firm. Deloitte's US AI page covers designing, building and scaling AI solutions and fitting them into existing systems. It offers managed services for AI models and platforms, and help choosing models against cost and risk. Deloitte's press release of 22 July 2026 says its forward deployed engineers work side by side with client teams in six- to eight-week sprints. Deloitte operates as a global network of member firms.
=4. LeewayHertz (7 of 10)
Best for buyers with a defined AI build who want a dedicated team or engineers added to their own. LeewayHertz, part of The Hackett Group, builds and deploys AI and agents for sectors including banking, healthcare and retail, then supports and maintains them. It offers three engagement models: a dedicated team, team extension and a project-based model. Its ZBrain platform supports models on Azure AI Foundry, AWS Bedrock and Google Vertex AI.
=4. McKinsey, QuantumBlack (7 of 10)
Best for board-led AI transformation where strategy and build sit in one firm. QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, is McKinsey's AI consulting arm. Its page cites a generative AI application for clinical documents, built with a pharmaceutical client. Under its Frontier Alliance with OpenAI, announced on 23 February 2026, McKinsey builds and deploys production-grade agents with clients through QuantumBlack's forward-deployed teams. The alliance aims for governed production deployments within weeks.
=4. NomadX (7 of 10)
Best for businesses in the UAE and the wider Gulf that want AI agents built and run from Dubai. NomadX builds custom agents for production and runs them afterwards, with monitoring, model updates and incident response. It says first agents typically go live in under four weeks, and its readiness assessment takes one to two weeks. It prices each job to scope, builds for sectors including fintech and banking, and works with Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and open-source models.
=7. IBM Consulting (6 of 10)
Best for enterprises building an AI platform with OpenAI, Microsoft, AWS or Google Cloud. IBM Consulting offers to build and operate an enterprise AI platform, alongside agentic AI, data and governance work. Its Forward Deployed Units are small teams of engineers and experts who work directly with clients to build and deploy AI systems. Its AI page names partnerships with OpenAI and Google Cloud, work on Microsoft Azure and premier AWS consulting partner status. IBM has employees in more than 170 countries.
=7. Neurons Lab (6 of 10)
Best for banks, wealth managers and insurers that want agents built inside their own infrastructure. Neurons Lab takes custom agents from discovery to production, and its forward-deployed engineers stay alongside the client's team after launch. It lists offices in London and Singapore. Its site says it holds partner status with OpenAI and Anthropic, and an AWS AI Competency in agentic AI.
=7. Slalom (6 of 10)
Best for enterprises that want the firm that builds the system to run it afterwards. Slalom builds with clients on clean data and modern architecture, then runs agentic workflows in production as a managed service. Its Forward Deployed Expertise model places a cross-functional team, technical experts among them, directly within client organisations. Partners include AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft and OpenAI. Slalom serves financial services, healthcare, the public sector and other sectors from 12 countries.
=7. Thoughtworks (6 of 10)
Best for engineering-led agent builds that need governance across several models and clouds. Thoughtworks builds production-grade agents on its AI/works platform, which it says takes a system from idea to production in three months. AI/works then monitors and maintains the system after launch. Its Agent/works platform governs, observes and tracks the cost of agents across any model, framework or cloud. Thoughtworks names AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft, Databricks, NVIDIA and Anthropic among the platforms it works with, and has offices in 18 countries.
=11. BCG X (5 of 10)
Best for AI products and new businesses built alongside BCG's strategy work. BCG X, BCG's tech build and design division, builds, maintains and scales client solutions. Its forward deployed AI engineers work directly with clients to build and deploy production-grade AI systems, its careers pages say. It has more than 3,000 tech builders, designers and entrepreneurs across 80 cities, and cites more than 30 technology and business partnerships.
=11. Faculty (5 of 10)
Best for public services, defence and regulated sectors that put AI safety first. Faculty develops custom AI systems and maintains them once deployed, with AI safety and due diligence as specialist services. Its job board lists forward deployed engineers who work with clients, including on site. It works from London, with an expansion to Australia announced, across sectors including defence, public services, health, energy and financial services. Its homepage carries a testimonial from OpenAI's chief executive on its safety work.

Best AI consulting firms by buyer situation

The overall rank serves one buyer. If your situation differs, these are the firms whose published facts fit it most closely.

AI consultancy for production systems
All twelve say they build AI systems and stay involved through managed operations, maintenance or engineers working with your team. Of the twelve, only 1AYM publishes day rates, and NomadX and LeewayHertz explain how they price.
Enterprise AI consulting for finance
Neurons Lab focuses on financial services, building for banking, wealth management and insurance. 1AYM works in financial services, and Faculty, LeewayHertz, NomadX, Slalom and Thoughtworks each list financial services, banking or fintech among their sectors.
AI consultancy for UAE businesses
NomadX is based in Dubai and builds Arabic-capable agents. 1AYM works with clients across the Gulf and has built Arabic-language AI, such as bilingual Arabic-English search and Arabic document OCR.
A multi-country programme
Accenture, Deloitte and IBM Consulting each publish a presence in dozens of countries, for a programme that must land in many markets at once.
Strategy and build from one firm
BCG X and QuantumBlack sit inside strategy firms, so the board work and the build can be bought together.
Senior engineers inside your own team
Ten of the twelve name a way to put their engineers alongside your team, most often as forward deployed engineers. 1AYM's version is Embedded Engineers on Contract, from three months and priced per day, and LeewayHertz offers team extension.

Large consultancy or specialist firm: the trade-offs

Accenture, BCG X, Deloitte, IBM Consulting and McKinsey's QuantumBlack are the five large global consultancies on the list. The other seven are specialist or engineering-led firms, and the table compares the two groups on the same published facts.

Five questions to ask every firm on your shortlist

Use the criteria as a script for the first call. Each question takes a minute to ask, and the answers fill the gaps a website leaves.

For the wider decision of which kind of supplier you need, see the question to ask each kind of AI supplier in our buyer guide.

What have you built that is still running?
Ask for one system in daily use, who operates it now and how long it has run.
What does a day of a senior engineer cost?
Ask for the day rate by seniority, or the fixed price of the first scope, before the second meeting.
When can the first engineer start?
Ask for a date from the day the scope is signed, and who that engineer is.
Which models would you use, and why?
Ask how the choice is made for your workload, and what it would take to switch providers later.
Who on your team will write our code?
Ask to meet the engineers who would do the work as well as the people selling it.

Where 1AYM fits

If you are shortlisting AI consulting firms for a production build, bring in 1AYM. Our senior engineers build working systems, priced by the day from £750, with no six-figure slide decks. Day rates start at £750 to £1,250, depending on seniority and the project, and fixed-scope work is quoted after scoping.

Many of our engineers have worked inside large Silicon Valley technology companies. Our engineers hold Anthropic's Claude certifications, the founder among them. 1AYM is an OpenAI Select Partner and model-selective across OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini and open-source models.

The usual starting point is Enterprise AI Platform & Agentic Workflows: a fixed-scope architecture plus the production build. Fixed-scope work can start within a day of the scope being signed, and we take small statements of work as well as larger builds. Book a 30-minute call or email enquiries@1aym.com, and we will tell you what your build would take.

For engineers: how to evaluate a firm's engineering

A score built from websites tells you what a firm says. These checks tell you what its engineers do. Ask for each in a system the firm has already built, or in the first week of a paid scope.

A repository you can walk through
Ask to walk through a repository the firm built, with the client's permission or a redacted copy. Look for tests, typed interfaces, infrastructure as code and commit history from the people who would work on yours.
Evaluation that gates a merge
A versioned set of cases drawn from real inputs runs on every change to a prompt, a tool, the code or the model version. A failing score blocks the merge. Ask for the last run that failed and what changed because of it.
Model version control
The model and its version sit in configuration, behind an interface that lets you swap providers. An upgrade happens only after the evaluation set passes on the new version, with a tested way back.
Permissions an agent cannot widen
Agents run under identities your organisation issues, with the narrowest scopes the task needs. A write to a system of record passes a deterministic check or a human approval before it lands.
Traces and cost per run
Every model call and tool call is logged with its inputs, outputs, identity, latency and token cost, in a store your team can query. Ask what one run of the main workflow costs today.
A runbook your team can follow
Ask who gets paged when the system fails at 2am and what they read first. A good answer names your engineers, a written runbook and the alerts that point to it.
