The short version

Mistral released the weights of Mistral Large 4 on 29 October 2026. On Mistral's own API it costs $0.70 per million input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens.

The weights and the licence
The weights are free to use, change, fine-tune and sell on. A business that offers the model as a service needs a separate commercial licence from Mistral.
Price and where it runs
On Mistral's API it costs $0.70 input, $0.07 cached input and $2.10 output per million tokens. The weights are on Hugging Face, and Microsoft Foundry offers a private deployment option.
Running it yourself
The model card's serving example spreads the model across a node of 8 GPUs. Only about one in twenty of its parameters runs for each token.

Open weights under a modified MIT licence, with one condition for resellers

What was announced

Mistral put Mistral Large 4 into public preview on 6 October 2026. On 29 October it released the weights of an improved version. Open weights means the model file itself is published, so anyone can download it and run it on their own hardware.

Mistral's flagship model has 1 trillion parameters, the learned values that make up a model, and reads text and images natively. Mistral says three more weeks of training since the preview improved its coding and its defensive cybersecurity work. It also says the model now reasons with fewer tokens, which lowers running costs.

The model comes under the Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license, which Mistral describes as a modified MIT license. It is free to use, modify, fine-tune and sell on. The one condition applies to a business that runs a Model-as-a-Service offering. It needs a separate commercial licence from Mistral before it uses the model commercially.

Mistral says the model was trained from scratch on European infrastructure. The model card puts that at 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own datacentres in Europe.

What it means for enterprises

On Mistral's stated terms, a bank, insurer or public body can run the model for its own work without paying a licence fee.

The condition applies to anyone who sells access to the model itself. Model-as-a-Service means offering the model to others as a hosted service, such as an API. Software firms that plan to put the model behind their own product should read the licence text closely. Mistral hasn't published the terms of the separate licence.

A buyer with sovereignty rules gets a model trained in Europe that can run without Mistral's API. Mistral says organisations can inspect, customise and deploy it on their own infrastructure.

Before you switch it on

Your use case
Write down whether you will use the model for your own work, inside a product you sell, or as a hosted model for others. The separate licence is for Model-as-a-Service offerings, so ask Mistral early if your plan could count as one.
The licence text
Have your legal team read the full Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license on the model card before you rely on it.
Your own test
Run a sample of your real tasks through Mistral Large 4 and your current model. Every benchmark figure so far is Mistral's own.

Price and where it runs: Mistral's API, Hugging Face, NVIDIA and Microsoft Foundry

What was announced

On Mistral's API, the model costs $0.70 per million input tokens, $0.07 per million cached input tokens and $2.10 per million output tokens. A token is a word or part of a word. Cached input is repeated text, such as the same long instructions sent with every request. By our arithmetic it costs a tenth of fresh input.

Mistral offers the model in Mistral Studio, on its API as mistral-large-4, in Vibe Code and on OpenRouter. The weights are on Hugging Face, ready to serve with the open-source tools vLLM or SGLang. NVIDIA offers hosted endpoints and a ready-made NIM container.

Microsoft Foundry has the model too, with private deployment options for Azure developers. In Mistral's announcement, Microsoft says it is the first cloud provider to bring the model to customers. Neither side gives a Foundry price or a list of regions.

Mistral says customers can adapt the model to their own data with Mistral Forge, and build and govern agents in Mistral Studio. Its Applied AI experts can work alongside a customer's team.

What it means for enterprises

Take a team that sends 100 million input tokens and gets back 20 million output tokens a month. By our arithmetic, it would pay $70 plus $42, or $112, at Mistral's list price before any caching. Price your own monthly volume the same way, from your current bills.

Of the three routes, the API is likely the cheapest to start and needs no hardware. A private deployment on Foundry runs the model within Azure. Running the weights on your own servers gives the most control, and it also takes the most hardware and the most people.

The pages we read don't say where Mistral's API processes data. A buyer with residency rules should ask Mistral where processing runs before sending such data to the API, or look at Foundry or self-hosting.

Before you switch it on

Monthly volume
Take a month of token counts from your current provider's bills. Priced at $0.70 input and $2.10 output per million, they give the API cost before caching.
Foundry price and region
Ask Microsoft for the Foundry price and the regions for Mistral Large 4 before you plan on a private deployment there.
API data location
Ask Mistral in writing where its API processes and stores your prompts before you send it any data that has to stay in a country.

Running it yourself: what a 1-trillion-parameter model asks of your hardware

What was announced

Mistral Large 4 is a mixture of experts. The model is split into many specialist parts, called experts, and only a few of them run for each token. It has 128 experts, of which 4 run for each token, plus 1 shared expert.

The model card says 49 billion parameters run for each token, or 52 billion counting its embedding and output layers. By our arithmetic, that is about one in twenty of the full trillion. The model card also offers a smaller NVFP4 version for NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, which Mistral says uses less memory and runs faster with the same performance.

The model card's serving example spreads the model across a node of 8 GPUs, and the card says to adjust that to your own setup. It handles up to 1 million tokens of context, which is the amount of text it can consider at once.

What it means for enterprises

Self-hosting a model of this size means buying or renting the GPUs. Someone also has to keep the model served and patched, and respond when it fails.

Only about one in twenty parameters works on each token, which can keep the computing cost of each token down. The whole model still has to be loaded into GPU memory, which is likely why the example uses a full node of 8 GPUs.

Self-hosting is likely to make sense only where a company's data can't leave its own servers. Volume is the other reason, once owned hardware costs less than paying per token.

Before you switch it on

Hardware
Ask your cloud provider or hardware supplier what an 8-GPU node costs a month in the region your data must stay in. Ask too whether Blackwell GPUs are available there for the NVFP4 version.
People
Put the cost of the engineers who will serve, monitor and update the model next to the hardware cost. Their cost stays the same whether traffic is heavy or light.
Break-even
Compare a month of self-hosting cost with the same month priced at Mistral's API rates. Self-host only where the numbers or the residency rules demand it.

Where the market is heading: a European flagship that buyers can host themselves

Mistral says organisations can use Mistral Large 4 without depending on Mistral to serve it through an API. Enterprises in the UK, the US and the Gulf with residency or sovereignty rules can host a flagship-size model on their own servers.

The model card reports a score of 26 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5, the highest among western open-weight models. It also says the top open-weight models from China score higher on that index. A buyer who wants an open-weight model built outside China can start with Mistral Large 4, which has the top western score on that index.

At $0.70 input and $2.10 output per million tokens on Mistral's API, the model is worth testing on your own tasks against today's spend.

For engineers: the architecture, serving, API features and Mistral's benchmark figures

Architecture and serving

The Hugging Face repository is mistralai/Mistral-Large-4-1T-A52B. It is a mixture-of-experts model with 128 routed experts, 4 active per token, and 1 shared expert. Active parameters are 49 billion per token, or 52 billion including embeddings and output layers.

Serve it with vLLM or SGLang. The model card's example uses a tensor-parallel size of 8. It describes that as an example for a node of 8 GPUs, to adjust to your topology. The NVFP4 quantised checkpoint targets Blackwell GPUs with a smaller memory footprint.

On NVIDIA's stack, Mistral lists NeMo AutoModel for customisation, TensorRT LLM for serving and a NIM container.

Sources: [1] [2]

API features and reasoning modes

The model takes text and image input and returns text, with a context length of 1 million tokens. It supports function calling, JSON output and strict JSON schema enforcement. On Mistral's API the model id is mistral-large-4. The model is fluent in more than 160 languages, including every official EU language.

Each request sets one of three reasoning modes, and Low, for simple tasks, replaces the earlier None setting. Medium is for everyday tasks, and High, the default, is for the hardest cases.

Mistral's benchmark figures

Mistral reports 19.7% on FrontierCode 2.0, Cognition's private benchmark, and says that is the top score. On the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index it reports 48%, effectively tied with the top open-weight model, GLM-5.3. It also reports using 47% fewer tokens per task on average.

On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Mistral reports 41%, 13 points above the preview, with 30% fewer output tokens. It also reports 73.3% on Finch and 84.5% on BrowseComp. In Surge Code's blind pairwise evaluations, Mistral says it was preferred over GLM-5.3, Kimi K3 and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash. By Mistral's account it ranked behind only Claude Opus 5.5 among the models evaluated.

Sources: [1] [2]

Cybersecurity guardrails

Mistral reports 51% on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index. It says the model refused 96.6% of malicious cyber requests on average, the highest rate it measures among open models. On the B3 Agent Security Benchmark, it resisted 97.1% of attacks, against 93.3% for the preview.

Mistral says live traffic since the preview showed the model has the potential to help someone carry out real attacks. It says it is changing the guardrails and will keep updating them. If you host the weights yourself, ask Mistral how those updates will reach your own copy of the model. Keep your own input and output filtering in front of the model as well.

A specialised cybersecurity version, for penetration testing, vulnerability assessment and red-teaming, is in preview for enterprise design partners only. Access depends on vetting and contractual safeguards, and testing is limited to systems the partner owns or is authorised to test.
